Dumplings (2004)

SO not what I expected. Asian horror is usually weird, granted… but it’s usually more visually scary than this. Apparently, this was part of another movie called Three Extremes, and this was a fully fleshed movie of a story included in the film. I’m curious to see the (original?) other version.

The scare here isn’t in the visuals. It’s in the grotesque. I wouldn’t call it gory, but there are some severely disturbing shots in this film that, if nothing else, make you feel sort of icky. I had to force myself to continue looking at the screen a few times. Also, the sound made during the preparation and consuming of the dumplings was really gross. It was a strange, crunchy, fleshy sound… yuck!!

Bottom line… good film. But no more dumplings for me for a while. No sir and no ma’am.

Well. A remake that was GOOD. I really enjoyed this. Jeff Goldblum has the perfect enthusiasm for what the director was trying to accomplish here. It added enough to make it acceptable for a mid-80s audience — the original was late 50s, and the horror audience’s tolerance threshold has increased dramatically — but it didn’t stray so far away from the original that it was unrecognizable. The makeup effects were great, and I can say that because I was just a touch grossed out at times. That says a lot. Geena Davis is my only complaint here, but I never really liked her. I only sort-of liked her in A League of Their Own and that’s probably because I loved that movie so much, it was easy to put up with her beaver teeth and consequently annoying pronunciation.

ROFLMFAO

That is all.

Well, sort of. A list.

  • Jet engine exhaust
  • Does music soothe the wild beast?
  • The sweat cocktail
  • The super glue
  • Bad dog
  • Invisible man
  • Poo cocktail supreme
  • Pin the tail on the donkey

There are so many more… but aside from that… the cinematography was amazing!  Truly excellent film making, even if the content was questionable.  Which, to me and my friends, it’s absolutely hysterical.  I wish I’d peed before the movie because I had to fight not to wet myself several times.  I think I might need to go see all the others that came before this.
