Columbine: Understanding Why (2007)

Eh, you know… maybe it’s because bullying has been such a hot topic in the past year or two… but this was all full of “duh, obviously” information. Stuff everybody who watches the news knows. Didn’t do so much for me. Too much common sense and not enough new information.

You can say whatever you want about the F&F franchise, but I love it. Granted, I haven’t seen 2 or 4, but I’m told that 2 is unwatchable and also unrelated to the rest of them. I still need to see 4, and I feel like I still need to try and watch 2.

But anyway, the first one is one of my favorite movies. It’s one of my big-time quotables, apparently. Especially drunk, so I’m told. But I’ve loved that movie since the first time I saw it. Then I saw 3… against my better judgment, since I HATE watching movies out of sequence. And I liked it quite a bit. I didn’t really want to see 5, since I hadn’t seen 4… and it seems as though I missed a few important details. So I really do need to see 4.

I loved 5. Something about F&F makes their heinous errors completely acceptable. Like in the first one. O’Connor overdoes it with the NOS, and that causes… his floor panel to fall out? And little things… like when Jesse’s looking under the hood of the Supra that Brian has towed in. He says, “2JZ, no shit!” when every Supra had that engine. Little things like that.

And there were huge errors like that in 5. I really wish I could point them out… but I don’t do spoilers, so I’ll just say this: The climax… the actual heist… is utterly ridiculous. That doesn’t mean I didn’t love it though.

Anywho, I guess my general point here is that I loved the movie. It’s hard to post about recent movies without spoilers and still get my point across… but… there it is.

Gran Torino (2008)

Wow.

Of course I thought this was going to be another ho-hum car movie. I was delighted to find out that the movie really doesn’t have much to do with the car at all, nice as it is.

Clint Eastwood is so fun to watch. I am not by any means saying he’s a good actor. In fact, I don’t really think he is. I have no way of knowing, since he always plays the same character, more or less. But that also doesn’t mean he’s not fun to watch. And in this movie, it’s especially fun.

I don’t care what anyone says… the dude is funny. He’s an absolute curmudgeon, and the racism just makes it hysterical. Anyone who doesn’t think so is really just too sensitive. Hell, look at Thao and Sue. He calls Thao “zip” about a skillion times, and Sue and Thao just glaze over it. Nobody cares. In fact, Sue doesn’t let him fool her into believing he’s that much of an asshole. She knows there’s something good in there, and she finds it underneath all the piss, vinegar, and racial slurs. Those are all just a facade.

Point is, I freaking loved this.

RoboCop (1987)

While I’m not sure how I feel about this — I definitely do not rate it up there with other 80s classics that I know and love — there were some memorable points:

1. “Bitches leave.”
2. *Bob Morton gets shot several times in the leg* “STOP IT!”
3. “come quietly or there will be… trouble.” “awwww… fuck you!”
4. When the giant shooter/walker thing falls down the stairs and squeals like a pig on the landing
5. *shoots giant gun* “I… LIKE IT!”
6. “Murphy! I’m a mess!”

But I think the best part about this movie is the fact that Dan O’Herlihy, better known as CONAL FREAKIN COCHRAN is in this movie!

Love. Just… love. A list:

1. “Wax on, wax off. Wax on, wax off.”
2. “Left the circle, right the circle.”
3. “BEGINNER’S LUCK, YOU!”
4. “UP!!!! DOOOOWN!! HAHAHAHA!”
5. Miyagi laughing his ass off at Daniel when he falls off the boat.
6. “BONZAAAAAI!!!”
7. “Happy biiiiirthday dear Daniel-saaaaan….”
8. “I don’t know. First time me, first time you.”
9. GET HIM A BODY BAG!!!

All except for that last one which was one of the idiot thugs, pretty much everything Miyagi says… lol

The Warriors (1979)

Date Watched: October 26, 2010

This was great. There were so many cheesetastically excellent things about this movie. First off, there is no way you’ll ever convince me that gangs in the late 70s dressed that way. Especially the baseball players. Who the hell is going to take you seriously when you’re wearing a baseball uniform and a brightly painted face? Thugs on rollerskates? Really? Second, the acting was so ridiculous. The Lizzy gang especially, I think. And, it’s so hard to believe people actually spoke that way at one point. There was so much jive talk my head was spinning.

What I will say, aside from the cheese, is that the fight scenes were definitely very well done. The chase scenes weren’t bad either. I just really enjoyed pretty much everything about this movie for one reason or another.

Can you dig?

Lean On Me (1989)

Holy Helen of Troy but was this movie good. Are schools actually like that? That was worse than some of the stuff on 21 Jump Street and that was kind of bad at times. I wonder if it would have really been so easy to turn a school like that around… or if it just looked easier than it was.

Morgan Freeman was complete bad-ass in this movie. He doesn’t hesitate to bark at whoever gets in his way. I was back and forth a little bit about those criticizing him. Did they not realize how that kind of dire situation required exactly what he did? Or did he not realize what a jerk he was? I think it might have been a little of both.

Anywho, this was a powerful film. It was hard for me to relate to it, since I went to school in a decent, Caucasian majority district. But I was still enthralled with it. Definitely worth renting.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009)

I loved this one almost as much as I loved the first one. There were definitely more comedic scenes in this one, but it still balanced very well with the storyline and the gratuitous violence. Clifton Collins was just plain hysterical… even better than their hapless Italian sidekick from the first movie. His choice of weapons was pretty damned funny.

And the silenced Desert Eagles? Excessive maybe, but damned cool.

Love.

The Boondock Saints (1999)

I love the story, I love THE TWIST (there is one), I love the brothers who are slicker than oil on water, I love what they do, I love the FBI agent, I love the hapless Italian sidekick, I love the gratuitous violence, and not that I’m a holy roller, but I love the religious aspect too. I got goosebumps in the first scene with the church.

Ugh, I can’t even put into words how much I loved this movie. What a crap review… because all I can say is… “um… LOVE.”
